Sonam dad is of punjabi descent while her mother, sunita kapoor, an ex model, of sindhi. She is the eldest of three children, others being sister rhea and brother harshvardhan. Her sister, rhea kapoor, recently, ventured into production with the film aisha (2010) starring sonam herself. Boney kapoor, her uncle, is a famed producer is married to the top yesteryear actress sridevi. Her uncle sanjay kapoor is into acting too. Her grandfather is filmproducer sanjay kapoor. Sonam kapoor did her schooling from arya vidya mandir at juhu, mumbai. She later enrolled in the untied world college of south east asia, singapore, for her international baccalaureate on theater arts, English and history. She, then, via correspondence majored in economics and political science at Mumbai university. Sonam was an average student, but she loved dancing. She joined Kathak classes at a very early age and received training in classical Indian and Latin dance forms. Although Sonam Kapoor was from a family deep rooted in the Hindi film fraternity, she grew up in a particularly typical and disciplined environment. Neither Sonam nor her siblings were exposed much to Bollywood glam world. Her mother kept them well rooted. She was sure that her children, including Sonam, would achieve great success academically. Sonam was nicknamed Giraffe by her father. She used to play basketball with her childhood friend and now actor, Ranbir Kapoor in a local club. She even captained the basketball team at School. After coming back from Singapore, Sonam Kapoor, due to her immense passion for writing and her intense desire to be a filmmaker, joined filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali as an assistant director for the film Black (2005). During that time Sanjay Leela Bhansali convinced Sonam that she should be an actress and offered her a film. Sonam mom, who came from a business family, did not initially approve of Sonam taking away acting and preferred that she gets a college education, and then eventually marry and settle down. And, also, Sonam was considerably overweight, around 90 kilograms. It was when she had decided to act she sheds those extra pounds and went through those usual acting and diction classes. Sonam Kapoor made her much awaited debut with Saawariya (2007) opposite her childhood friend Ranbir Kapoor also an assistant director on BLACK. Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky short story White Nights, and released and co produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment, this Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial failed to do well commercially and critically as well. However, Sonam Kapoor was highly noticed for her portrayal of Sakina and was nominated for the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. Her next release was Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Delhi 6 (2009) opposite Abhishek Bachchan. This film, too, failed to do well, but Sonam uninhibited spontaneous performance was well appraised. She was even more appreciated for her performance for the song, Masakalli, in the film. In the year 2010, Sonam starred in Dharma Production romantic comedy I hate love story (2010) opposite Imran Khan. The film was the directorial debut of Punit Malhotra. I hate love story (2009) was Sonam first ever commercially successful film. The same year, she starred in the film Aisha (2010) costarring Abhay Deol. Based on Jane Austen novel Emma, Aisha (2010) was produced under production house, Anil Kapoor Films Company and was directed by Rajshree Ojha. Aisha (2010) did average business at the BoxOffice. Sonam Kapoor would be next seen in Anees Bazmee directed movie Thank you , starring Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol, and Suniel Shetty. The film is slated to release in April, 2011.
